MyDataIsMyData.org was created as a direct response to the uproar surrounding the broach of privacy that the Facebook Beacon program resulted in. The Beacon controversy was centered on Facebook setting up agreements with online retailers (such as Amazon.com or Blockbuster) to facilitate the use of Facebook user’s information.

Facebook shares your private information with websites without your knowledge and with limited control. MyDataIsMyData was created to give you, the user, more control over whith who, where and when your private information is shared.

MyDataIsMyData is a plug-in that helps counteract the collection and sale of personal information through the Facebook Beacon.

This plug-in, whose development was sponsored by Flugpo, is available through MyDataIsMyData.org.

Selling private information for profit unbeknownst to the user’s is an abuse of their trust and MyDataIsMyData.org hopes to empower these user’s by allowing them to control the amount of personal information that they make visible.

I know of a new social networking site that has all the features of Facebook or Myspace (plus much more), but they do not share your personal information with any third party sites. There is actually a disclaimer when you sign up stating so, so if something were to happen you are covered legally! I have not heard of anyone having problems with this site yet.
